Some Wealth is Earned, and Deserved

Post by BobH »

A remarkable story has emerged following the death today of Trevor Hemmings

In 1940 the family Hemmings uprooted from London and Woolwich Arsenal and Dad took up a job at the Chorley Ordnance Factory near Preston – same trade, safer place. It was a timely move. The blitz began with a daylight raid by 950 aircraft on September 7, followed by 57 nights of bombing which destroyed much of the East End and City.
Hemmings says: "I clearly remember the barrage balloons in the sky, getting locked into the Anderson shelter and everyone going into big air-raid shelters in the tube station to escape the bombs. I can recall climbing mountains of rubble with other kids and rows of houses that had just disappeared. We lost a lot of family, including my Uncle Paddy, in the blitz.

"I was just over four when we moved up here to 9 Lynton Avenue, Leyland. I soon dropped my cockney accent or I wouldn't have survived."

He was a workaholic in short trousers and says: "I looked at families who were not well-off and then at how the better-off managed things. It was very simple – in the homes where people were doing well the husband worked longer hours. I noticed that when I was very young.

"I listened to people who had achieved things and it struck me the best way was to work hard from the beginning.

"I had two paper rounds and sometimes three, which meant being a bit late for school sometimes. By the age of ten I was working as a petrol-pump attendant, by 11 I had a grocery round for Harry Hindle in Bent Lane with a horse and cart – the horse was called Klondike and every Saturday there would be a 10lb sack of spuds for Mrs Smalley in Golden Hill.

"I worked anywhere I could to make a shilling – skimming the top off the milk in a dairy and raising day-old chicks on warm bags of cement.

"And there were other places to learn – I went to night school and day-release courses. It was a different world and during the war, between the ages of four and ten, I'd go to see my mother's parents, who'd been bombed out and moved into a pre-fab."

After a four-year apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Hemmings started his first building business in the 1960s with £12. It was sold to Christian Salvesen in 1970 for £1.5m.

Hemmings was on his way and formed a massively important alliance with the holiday camp entrepreneur Fred Pontin.

Hemmings eventually led a management buyout of Pontins and later sold the business to Coral. Since then he has owned casinos, Blackpool Tower, hotels, countless pubs, racecourses, brought Center Parcs to Britain and owned numerous businesses plus a backbone holding of ten million square feet of commercial property.

His charity funding has been endless, with the Princess Royal's Carers Trust to the fore, plus the Red Cross, RNLI and Samaritans among many beneficiaries. On the day of my visit he had been a visitor at his local Rainbow House for sick and challenged children around the corner. In recognition, he holds the honour CVO – Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

A spry man, twinkling of eye, he stands tall and straight, probably because there is plenty of steel to his backbone. And he remains unsullied by wealth, largely because he is not the type to be fussed with its trappings.

The clue is that cloth cap, a badge for himself and a signal to others.

He says: "I have my breakfast wearing it. It stands for the working man in the North. And I've always felt like one of them."

Trevor Hemmings owned 100s of racehorses - winning the Grand National on three occasions. He was the owner of Preston North End FC. He latterly lived in the Isle of Man, many describing him as a recluse. In truth he always insisted that his business was his own - no-one else's.

RIP Trevor

Some have talent,
others just work hard,
looks like I still have a long way to go...

There is nothing wrong with wealth if you earn it fairly and keep spending it, which gives others work and so a life worth living.
It's those that make others work in hard and dangerous conditions for a pittance, then accumulate vast wealth and hoard it, then pass it on to their useless offspring who do nothing socially beneficial with it.
Those who, for instance, remove coal and oil from the ground, making billions, leaving gaping holes in the ground which collapse a hundred years later, but for which their super rich offspring carry no responsibility. It will be the same story with nuclear waste and all of the satellite junk orbiting above us.

A few days ago a few people flew into orbit for a few seconds, what a climax, for them.
That money could have funded the corona vaccination of ... the rest of the worlds population, a couple of hospitals or schools (anywhere), the entire northern high speed railway network or some other such socially beneficial project.

But hey ho, watching Captain kirk cry made me laugh and if he is happy, fuck the rest of you suckers    .

John,
I bought my first 'own house' in 1985 for 15 grand, having worked abroad in a high risk job to get the money together. Getting on the housing ladder was never easy if your parents can't help in any way. It was a former counsel house but gave me the base from which to climb the ladder.

Years later, sat in a bar, I heard a young woman moaning to a girlfriend 'she had inherited her third house in that year and didn't know what to do with it'. Renovate it and move in, just rent it out or sell it'. I leaned over and said "darling I should love to have your problems" .

I don't like paying tax, does anybody ? But for those who just inherit vast amounts of wealth having done nothing towards earning it themselves should, in my opinion, have to pay substantial taxes. They have already benefited from having a good education and privileged medical care etc. and they should have to prove their worth and create their own wealth. Unless of course that wealth is 'locked in' a business employing people in 'good work'.

I could go on and on and on and I know that I do and I probably will keep on till I can no more ;)

Hi OLD Boy's
Yep I agree with your opinions on wealth Tax but have you considered what happened recently. I dont regularly "Gamble" but saw a poster in my local paper shop saying the EURO lottery was worth £185 million so I bought a ticket. As I walked the dog I dreamed of what I would do with that vast amount of money. Family, property, charity, reinvestments etc but even then I had not spent it all.
With the poverty around the world surely it would be more honourable once all ticket receipts had been counted a committee could reduce the jack pots and donate part of the recipts to worthwhile causes. People would still gamble for sums such as £20 K £15K £10K etc
If I had won I would have given you all a tenner.
Keep safe Mick/Marion max woof :o

Hi Mick,
the uk lottery fund does in fact donate very large sums to many good causes and I'm certain that here in Europe it's the same.

I have always thought that nobody should be allowed to accumulate more than a million Pounds/ Euro's/ Dollars/ in a single year. For 500,000,- you can buy a decent house to live in. For 250,000,- you can buy a car or several cars of great luxury. Then you still have 250,000,- to spend, that's over 20,000 per month and remember you wouldn't have a mortgage or car repayments to sort out. 20,000,- is more than many full time workers earn and try to house and feed their families on for a whole year and it's almost double my accumulated pensions .

If somebody is a good business person, in subsequent years they could accumulate their own considerable fortune. But hundreds and thousands of millions is an obscene amount for anybody to be in possession of. Nobody can work that hard, nobody has that much skill. Such sums can only be acquired by unethical means or inheriting money gained by unethical means: Under paying workers, inadequate health and safety at work, poor pension security or overcharging for a product or service etc. etc. etc.. Not to mention day light robbery and murder .

And Mick, either you have a lot of mates (185 million) or... a tenner, you tight sod   .
